About This Site

This website records the overlanding and other travels of Nina and Rob Blackwell and covers a period from March 2009 to the present. The images above are just a taste of the photographic record of our travels. Click here to see all of our travel photos.

Most of the travel recorded here has been vehicle based, and undertaken as overlanding adventures. Over the years we have had a number of vehicles and we have grouped our travels into Adventures based on the vehicle used.

Below you will find a summary of each of the different adventures and links to detailed pages about those adventures.

Clicking here will take you to a consolidated map of all our adventures. Each marker on the map represents a 'camping' spot where we spent at least one night, and the different adventures are represented by different colors.

Finally we hope and plan that the adventures are not yet over.

Hence when we are engaged in yet another adventure the section below entitled The Latest News will have summaries of the latest posts from which readers can link to the current adventure and all posts related to that adventure.

Our Adventures

The Americas

This is the earliest adventure recorded on this website and started in March of 2009. At the time we were novices at this overlanding thing and really had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. As it turned out .... read more

Around the World

Australia

Our 2019 Australian adventure was sufficently successful that we are now living back in Australia, planning a new travel vehicle and some more Australian based exploration. The new vehicle is currently undergoing some modification and preparations and sometime in 2nd quarter of 2023 we will be able to do our first trials.

Stay tuned .. once it is in our hands we will give you a tour and run down.

Antarctica

We will end 2019 with a cruise to the Antarctic aboard the Greg Mortimer. This is a new ship, having just completed its maiden voyage and is named after a famous (in Australia at least) mountaineer and antarctic traveler. ..... click to see more.

Asia 2020 and 2023

In Feb of 2023 we finally restarted our long planned trip in South East Asia which was started but quickly abandoned in 2020 due to the onset of COVID19. The highlights of this trip were undoubtedly Butan and a 2 day boat jounrney on the Mekong River from Luang Prabang, Laos to Houay Xay, Thailand.

A Great Train Journey

In 2024 we undertook a A Great Train Journey, from Singapore to London by train. Not one train but a series of interlinked train routes. The trip took us through Malaysia, Laos, China, Tibet, Kazakstan, Georgia, Azerbajan, Turkey, Austria, and France. This was a great overland journey across the largest land mass on the planet. A long sea voyage

In the first half of 2026 we undertook A Sea Voyage, from Bankok to Lisbon. The 60 day journey followed (approximately) an old colonial route via India and South Africa to Europe. Along the way visited over 30 ports in African and Asian countries as well as some of the worlds smallest island Nations. ..... click to see more.

Motorcycle Adventures

In 2015 on our annual return to the US, I Robert, decided to get myself a motorcycle license (my first ever experiences with motos) and a year later (again on our annual return to the US) I bought my first motorcycle a 2011 BMW1200 GS. That same year that motorcycle presented me with a broken leg and thats why we did not return to Europe that year. It was probably inevitable .... click this link to read more.

Motorcycle Adventures Round Australia

On May 16th 2025 I (Rob) set out to ride a motorcycle solo and unsupported around Australia.

The journey covered 15,000 km and last 2 months. The route was clockwise around the continent from Sydney and as much as possible avoided the coastal regions of the country, as to the extent possible I wanted this to be an outback expedition.

A tour of Doha (Doha, Qatar)

Journal entry for Thursday 7th May, 2026 (day 78, miles 0)

We are now on our way home to Sydney. Today in Doha Qatar is a stopover for a days rest for me and a city tour for the ever irrepressable Nina. Over the past few days we have trained from Freiburg to Frankfurt for a night in an airport hotel and yesterday we caught a morning flight from Frankfurt to Doha. Not surprisingly, given the war in the gulf, the flight was very lightly populated and therefore a bit more comfortable than usual.

Visit to Breisach (Freiburg, Germany)

Journal entry for Friday 1st May, 2026 (day 72, miles 0)

Today was another excursion; this time to the local small town named Breisach Am Rhein which overlooks the Rhine River and the border with France. After Breisach Am Rhein we ventured into France to visit an old walled city called Neuf-Brisach where we found a large crowd and a noisy festival underway as part of the May day (May 1st) celebrations.

Disembarkation (Lisbon, Portugal)

Journal entry for Friday 24th Apr, 2026 (day 65, miles 0)

Disembarkation was a slow affair. It seems that Europe has a new immigration computer system that will record biometric info about all people entering Europe in order to accurately enforce Shengen immigration rules. We got our first taste of this system today and while it might be comprehensive it is also slow. It took us about an hour to get through customs and immigration in Lisbon.

Goats in a Tree (Agadir, Marocco)

Journal entry for Wednesday 22nd Apr, 2026 (day 63, miles 0)

This morning we docked in the Moroccan town of Agadir, the last stop before Lisbon on Friday. Again we find our selves in a working port so ships are loading and unloading around us and the shore, immediately nearby is given over to stacked containers.
